Karen contacted me about building an interior stained glass transom for her home outside of Chicago. She wanted a simple traditional design with graceful curves, lots of bevels and just a hint of color. She wanted to let in maximum light and liked the idea of lots of bevels. She sent a photo of an antique transom she liked that she found on the internet ....pictured to the right.
Part of our challange was to make these design ideas work in a longer, narrower transom. We both searched the web diligently for the center motif and the beveled heart design of the window she liked. We finally realized we were just going to have to create our own design.
We found some heart bevels, a stylized iris bevel cluster, and a central traditional bevel cluster .... and evolved a working drawing.
Karen's chose an outer band of bevels surrounding a band of light blue waterglass. The 3 ellipses are a "rough rolled" clear glass that accounts for the texture and the "wavy" clear background is clear waterglass. Her transom is pictured to the left so that the viewer can see the transparency afforded by the various glass choices.
Karen's Transom measures approximately 12" x 66", contains 110 pieces of glass and was completed on July 4, 2011. It is now enjoying its new home in Glendale Heights, Illinois.
